What is “Discipleship”
Have you ever heard your church state that they want to be serious about “discipleship”? Have you been confused by what they are actually meaning? The term "discipleship" can be confusing because it encompasses a broad range of meanings and practices. Typically, it is used in three distinct ways: engagement, spiritual formation, and disciple-making. Engagement refers to how individuals connect with each other within a faith community through activities like attending services, serving, volunteering, and participating in small groups or classes. Spiritual formation focuses on growing in spiritual maturity through Sunday school, Bible studies, life groups, and practicing spiritual disciplines. Disciple-making emphasizes reproducing and multiplying disciples through mentoring, disciple-making movements (DMM), discovery Bible studies, and life-on-life discipleship. Each of these aspects highlights a different facet of discipleship, leading to varied interpretations and applications. By knowing these different definitions it will help you clarify what your church means when they use the word “discipleship”.
