DISCOVERING our habits

Our habits shape our hearts. How we regularly spend our time molds our passions and priorities over time, even unintentionally. Our rhythms, rituals, and consumption reveal what we love, what we believe, and what we worship.

As disciples of Jesus, our calling is to embody Christ’s character. Because my habits shape who I am becoming, I must regularly examine both my unintentional and intentional habits to discover whether they draw me closer to Jesus, reflect my values and priorities, and allow me to experience God daily.

How are my daily and weekly rituals shaping me? What do my current habits reveal about what is most important to me? What or who am I committing my time, money, and energy toward? Where might God be inviting me to make a change?

To help you answer these questions and intentionally examine your habits, our team has created a “Habit Tracker,” a weekly audit of daily habits. This free resource allows you to write down each of your current habits (unintentional or intentional) and the average amount of time you spend doing them each day. By doing a weekly audit, you’ll be able to spot patterns and identify rhythms in how you spend your time.

Although this exercise may sound intimidating at first, it’s worth it to discover what’s forming (or discipling) you. This tool isn't meant to shame or condemn you. Rather, the goal is to make you more aware of how you spend your time so that you can be more intentional about aligning your activities with who you want to become and live out of the deepest desires of your heart.

To become like Jesus, we must allow Him to reorder our affections daily toward the things of God and His Kingdom. This requires creating space in our daily rhythms to be with God in order to hear His still, small voice.

Pastor and author A.W. Tozer said that if we want to discover who we are, we should pay attention to what we want most, what we think about most, how we use our money, what we do with our leisure time, the company we enjoy, who and what we admire, and what we laugh at. Cultivating this attentive posture requires me to be still and allow the Holy Spirit to reveal the truth about my current life.

As you use the Habit Tracker this week to foster more intentionality and self-awareness, invite God’s Spirit to show you what habits to keep, to discard, or to start. Pray with God about where you are now, who you’re becoming, and who you want to be. Ask Him to show you where to start.
