The Square

The Square Tool, rooted in Ephesians 4:11-15, outlines the journey towards maturity in Christ within the body of believers. Paul's vision emphasizes the diversity of gifts Christ bestowed upon the church—apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors, and teachers—to equip believers and foster unity until all attain maturity in Christ. This maturity transcends mere knowledge, emphasizing the application of God's truth in daily life and the ability to teach others effectively.

The tool introduces four stages of spiritual growth—Infant, Child, Adult, and Parent—corresponding to physical maturation, where individuals progress from dependency on external sources for spiritual nourishment to self-sufficiency in studying and applying Scripture. This journey mirrors Hebrews 5:12-14, which contrasts spiritual infancy reliant on milk with maturity able to digest solid spiritual food through discernment and application of God's Word.

Leadership in these stages evolves from directive to coaching styles, reflecting Jesus' approach with His disciples as they moved from initial enthusiasm (Unconscious Incompetence) to confident competence (Unconscious Competence). Effective discipleship transitions from high direction and example to fostering consensus and equipping others, empowering them to lead and disciple new generations. Ultimately, the Square Tool challenges believers to pursue deep spiritual maturity, embodying Christ's likeness and fulfilling His Great Commission with conviction and competence.
